If you've spent any time in the gaming industry, you know Kickstarter has completely changed the board game landscape. Some of the biggest games on our shelves today started as passion projects backed by gamers who believed in an idea before it ever hit retail.
For collectors, Kickstarter exclusives can become prized treasures. For players, they offer unique experiences that often push the boundaries of what board games can be. Some campaigns become household names, while others remain hidden gems that only dedicated gamers know about.
As I dig through my treasure hoard of cardboard adventures, a few Kickstarter games stand out as absolute favorites and there are a couple upcoming projects I’m watching closely.
If there's one Kickstarter series that deserves more attention, it's Hexplore It.
This is one of my personal favorites because it focuses heavily on character building, strategic decision-making, and dice-driven adventure. Every playthrough feels different as you develop your hero, improve your abilities, and navigate a living fantasy world.
What makes Hexplore It stand out is its replayability. Beyond the core games, there are expansions that introduce new cards, new mechanics, and even additional roleplaying elements that can carry over between adventures. It's the kind of game that rewards players who enjoy investing time into a rich fantasy setting.
It's also notoriously difficult to find. You won't typically see it sitting on a big-box store shelf. In fact, the only reason we were able to get our hands on our copies was because we backed the original Kickstarter campaigns.
For gamers who love immersive fantasy worlds, meaningful character progression, and epic adventures that can unfold over multiple sessions, Hexplore It is a hidden treasure worth tracking down.
Of course, half the fun of Kickstarter is keeping an eye on what's coming next. I always have a few campaigns circled on my treasure map, and these are the ones currently catching my attention.
Whenever a major game series changes hands, gamers pay attention.
That's exactly why Zombicide: Dead Men Tales has landed on Gobby's watch list.
After years under CMON, the Zombicide franchise is now moving forward with support from Fantasy Flight Games and Asmodee. That's a significant shift for one of the most recognizable names in cooperative zombie-slaying games.
This newest entry takes the action to the high seas with a swashbuckling, treasure-hunting adventure that gives off serious Goonies-meets-zombie-apocalypse energy.
The biggest question isn't whether it'll be fun. Zombicide usually delivers plenty of dice chucking and monster smashing. What I’m most interested in is seeing how the new publisher's approach influences gameplay, components, and the overall campaign experience.
It's shaping up to be one of the more interesting Kickstarter launches for fans of the series.
Fantasy fans have been waiting a long time for a tabletop adaptation worthy of Robert Jordan's legendary world.
War of the Dragon aims to deliver exactly that.
Based on The Wheel of Time, this strategy game pits the forces of Light against the forces of Shadow in a battle that could determine the fate of the world. Designed for two to four players, the game focuses on strategic decision-making, alliances, and large-scale conflict inspired by the events of the beloved book series.
For fans of The Wheel of Time, this is definitely one campaign worth keeping an eye on and it can still be backed until June 23rd.
One of the things that makes Kickstarter special is the thrill of discovery. Whether you're revisiting classics, embarking on an epic adventure through Hexplore It, or keeping tabs on upcoming campaigns like Zombicide: Pirates and War of the Dragon, there's always another treasure waiting to be discovered.
Until next time,
— Gobby
